First, I want to wish you all a safe and enjoyable summer!
As all of you know, May is a time to remember and honor our fellow police officers who have given the last full measure in order to keep our communities safe.
Let us remember the bravery of Trooper Joshua Miller, who made the ultimate sacrifice to save a child. We can never forget his bravery, and this month is an excellent opportunity to honor his legacy. Please keep Trooper Miller and his family in your prayers.
2009 was a dangerous year for law enforcement in Pennsylvania. In addition to Trooper Miller, Pennsylvania also lost:
- Officer Christopher Jones of the Middletown Police Department;
- Officer John Pawlowski of the Philadelphia Police Department;
- Officer Eric Kelly of the Pittsburgh Police Department;
- Officer Stephen Mayhle of the Pittsburgh Police Department;
- Officer Paul Sciullo of the Pittsburgh Police Department; and
- Officer Michael Crawshaw of the Penn Hills Police Department.
Let us also remember the sacrifice of Trooper Paul Richey, who was killed in the lineof- duty on January 13, 2010 as a result of a gunshot wound suffered while investigating a domestic disturbance. He volunteered to go on the call that would ultimately cost him his life. Please keep Trooper Richey and his family in your prayers.
I encourage all of you at some point in your career to attend the National Peace Officer’s Memorial Service in Washington D.C., which is held every May 15th. I brought my son a few years ago. It’s something he will never forget.
It’s important for others to see just how many brave men and women we lose each year. Just as important, they need to see the countless police officers who attend the memorial – officers who so willingly step into the breach along the frontlines of our homeland and abroad on foreign battlefields.
Fraternally,
Bruce A. Edwards
